Step down training workshop on hiv/aids prevention and malaria control

The 2011 Step down Training Workshop was held at the OGADEP Headquarters on Thursday, 17th February 2011. The meeting commenced at 10.30am with the arrival and registration of participants. This was followed with introduction of guests to the high table by the Desk Officer, Mr. A.O. Osiyoye. On the high table were Dr. A. O. Adejobi of MNRDP Abuja, Mrs. A.O.Orire and Mrs. F.B. Orebiyi (Resource persons) from Abeokuta South Local Government and Pastor Bode Adenekan . The opening prayer was said by a NERICA Rice farmer, Imam Odenike. This was followed by a sensitization speech on HIV/AIDs from Mrs. Orire. After this, practical test was done for participants voluntarily. Earlier the Programme’s Manager address of welcome was given on his behalf by Mr A.O. Osiyoye while the goodwill message was given by Dr A.O. Adedeji Abuja on behalf of MNRDP Abuja
In attendance were Deputy Director Research & Training Mr. O.A. Akinsola, Head of Extension Ms T.O.Ayansanwo, Principal Agro processor, Mr. B.O. Obembe, State Action Committee on Aids’ Accountant Miss Mustapha, Nerica rice farmers from different LGAs in Ogun State, Nerica Staff from OGADEP Headquarters and Extension Agents.
It was a one-day programme which discussed effects of HIV/AIDS and Malaria Diseases on farmers. Papers presented at the workshop were:
1. Effects of HIV/AIDS on farmers –Mrs. M.O. Osiyoye
2. Burden of Malaria “ A Collective Responsibility towards Elimination” – Mrs. M.O. Osiyoye
The following salient issues were agreed upon by participants:
a. Farmers can adopt both natural and orthodox methods in the treatment of Malaria, but with more emphasis on orthodox method.
b. Efforts should be intensified to make mosquito treated nets available in subsequent HIV/AIDS Workshop.
c. Participants were encouraged to purchase mosquito net on their own
d. Avoidance of self-treatment. Visit to nearest health centre/hospital for diagnosis/treatment.
e. Maintenance of clean environment, devoid of stagnant waters or blocked drainages.
f. Regular check of HIV/AIDS status.
g. There should be no discrimination on people living with HIV/AIDS
The training was rounded-up by 2.30pm with the serving of Nerica Rice as Lunch.
