The 2011 Step down Training Workshop was held at the OGADEP Headquarters on Thursday, 17th February 2011. The meeting commenced at 10.30am with the arrival and registration of participants. This was followed with introduction of guests to the high table by the Desk Officer, Mr. A.O. Osiyoye. On the high table were Dr. A. O. Adejobi of MNRDP Abuja, Mrs. A.O.Orire and Mrs. F.B. Orebiyi  (Resource persons) from Abeokuta South Local Government and Pastor Bode Adenekan . The opening prayer was said by a NERICA Rice farmer, Imam Odenike. This was followed by a sensitization speech on HIV/AIDs from Mrs. Orire. After this, practical test was done for participants voluntarily. Earlier the Programme’s Manager address of welcome was given on his behalf by Mr A.O. Osiyoye while the goodwill message was given by Dr A.O. Adedeji Abuja on behalf of MNRDP Abuja

In attendance were Deputy Director Research & Training Mr. O.A. Akinsola, Head of Extension Ms T.O.Ayansanwo, Principal Agro processor, Mr. B.O. Obembe, State Action Committee on Aids’ Accountant Miss Mustapha,  Nerica rice farmers from different LGAs in Ogun State, Nerica Staff from OGADEP Headquarters and Extension Agents.
It was a one-day programme which discussed effects of HIV/AIDS and Malaria Diseases on farmers. Papers presented at the workshop were:
1.    Effects of HIV/AIDS on farmers –Mrs. M.O. Osiyoye
2.    Burden of Malaria “ A Collective Responsibility towards Elimination” – Mrs. M.O. Osiyoye
       
 The following salient issues were agreed upon by participants:
a.    Farmers can adopt both natural and orthodox methods in the treatment of Malaria, but with more emphasis on orthodox method.
b.    Efforts should be intensified to make mosquito treated nets available in subsequent HIV/AIDS Workshop.
c.    Participants were encouraged to purchase mosquito net on their own
d.    Avoidance of self-treatment. Visit to nearest health centre/hospital for diagnosis/treatment.
e.    Maintenance of clean environment, devoid of stagnant waters or blocked drainages.
f.    Regular check of HIV/AIDS status.
g.    There should be no discrimination on  people living with HIV/AIDS

The training was rounded-up by 2.30pm with the serving of Nerica Rice as Lunch.

Communique from 2011 Review Meeting

2011 annual review meeting for Nerica stakeholders
                      Communiqué
The 2011 Annual Review Meeting was held at the OGADEP Headquarters on Wednesday, 16th February 2011. The meeting commenced  at 9.30am with the arrival and registration of participants. This was followed by introduction of guests  to the high table by the desk officer, Mr. A.O. Osiyoye. The opening prayer said by a NERICA Rice farmer, Mr.A.Akinbo. This was followed by farmers’ anthem. Welcome address and good will messages were given  by the Programme Manager Mr.I.O.Phillips, MNRDP-Abuja Dr.A.O.Adejobi, and RIFAN Chairman Pastor Bode Adenekan. The reasons for the Review Meeting was enunciated by the desk officer. Dr.A.O. Adejobi spoke on the nutritional and yield values of Nerica. Then there was a section on the views of farmers on the way forward for Nerica Project.
In attendance were P.M. OGADEP Mr.I.O. Philllips, Director of Extension Otunba Moyo Owotomo,, Director of  Technical service Mr. B.O.Abiodun , Head of WIA Mrs M.O.Osiyoye, Head of Extension Miss T.O.Ayansanwo, Principal Agroprocessor, Mr. B.O. Obembe, Nerica rice farmers , Processors ,from different LGAs in Ogun State, and Nerica Staff from OGADEP Headquarters and Extension Agents.’
The Programme Manager, Mr.I.O.Phillips, Rep. from MNRDP-Abuja, Dr.A.    O.Adejobi and the Desk-Officer Mr.A.O.Osiyoye and RIFAN Chairman\\ Pastor Bode Adenekan. also went to Gateway Television for public sensitization on NERICA Rice Project at the Kaaro ojire Programme .
It was a one-day programme which discussed problems militating against Nerica and the solutions.
Participants identified marketing as a major constraint of NERICA Rice. The following salient issues were agreed upon:
a.    Two (2) Milling & destoning machines to be given to Ogun State NERICA Desk office by MNRDP Abuja
b.    Provision of a tractor and its complements for NERICA Rice farmers in Ogun State by MNRDP Abuja
c.    Each farmer should adopt conditional marketing for NERICA rice..
d.    RIFAN should take up the marketing of Nerica Rice by sourcing for markets in the neighbouring Ekiti and Nasarawa states.
e.    Training on processing of Nerica should be conducted for frontline extension agents and farmers.
f.    Milling & destining machine should be centrally located.
g.    Farmers enumerated the qualities of Nerica Rice-1 variety based on their field experience as follows:
1.    Drought tolerance
2.    Early maturity
3.    High tolerance to disease
h.    An average yield of 1.7mt per ha of rice field was received by the rice growers in Ogun State in the 2011 planting season. The yield potential of Nerica rice is 2.5mt -3.0mt per ha.
i.    The low yield of harvest attributed to thewrong planting distance in seed establishment. Extension Agents are to be trained on the correct planting distance for onward step down training to farmers on the field.
j.    Processed Nerica should be sold at N1,300 per 7kg

Communique from Financial Management Training

Financial and Management Training for Nerica Rice Staff and farmers
                      Communiqué
The Training on Financial and Management Training was held at the OGADEP Headquarters on Tuesday, 15h of February 2011. The training started at 9.30am with the arrival and registration of participants. This was followed by a brief  on the purpose of the training by  Mr. Odunoye Tajudeen, the organizer of the training. The opening ceremony was kick-started with an  opening prayer said by a NERICA Rice farmer, Mr.G.F. Olonode.
In attendance were P.M. OGADEP Mr.I.O. Philllips, State Project Coordinator of Fadama III, Mr. I.A. Onasanya., Director of Finance Mr. E.O.Adewoyin, Director of Research & Training, Mr.A.O.Adeleye , Deputy Director P.M.& E Alh.B.O.Bakare, Head of WIA Mrs M.O.Osiyoye, Head of Extension Miss T.O.Ayansanwo, Principal Agroprocessor, Mr. B.O. Obembe, Nerica rice farmers from different LGAs in Ogun State, and Nerica Staff from OGADEP Headquarters’
The Programme Manager, Mr.I.O.Phillips, Rep. from MNRDP-Abuja, Dr.A.    O.Adejobi and the Desk-Officer Mr.A.O.Osiyoye and RIFAN Chairman Pastor Bode Adenekan. also went to Paramount FM Radio for public sensitization on NERICA Rice Project.
It was a one-day programme, and the meeting exposing Nerica staff and farmers to pertinent accounting and Farm Management Concepts. Dr. Adejobi emphasized the importance of NERICA Rice as having good protein content, and good for people with diabetes problem.
 Papers presented by resource persons at the training were:
1.    Introduction to Book-Keeping , trading, Profit  & Loss Account by Miss S.O. Mustaphar
2.    Trial Balance and Bank reconciliation- Mr. D.O. Abiola
3.    Group Dynamics and Farm Budgets – Mr.D.O. Onigbinde.
Participants identified marketing as a major constraint of NERICA Rice. The following salient issues were agreed upon:
a.    Public sensitization on NERICA-Rice to be done on Radio and Television.
b.    Two (2) Milling & destoning machines to be given to Ogun State NERICA Desk office by MNRDP Abuja
c.    Provision of a tractor and its complements for NERICA Rice farmers in Ogun State by MNRDP Abuja
d.    Each farmer should adopt conditional marketing for NERICA rice..
e.    Packaging of NERICA Rice for sales to various stakeholders is underway.
The training was rounded-up by 4.30pm
